Urban Outfitters considering CY store

National retailer Urban Outfitters is in negotiations to open a store at Central and Cooper.

Andy Ashby, reporting for the Memphis Business Journal:

The Philadelphia-based retail company, which operates the Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Free People and Terrain store brands, is negotiating to lease a former antique mall building at the northeast corner of Central and Cooper, according to numerous real estate sources.

This would be the second Urban Outfitters-branded store in the state. Urban Outfitters opened a 12,000-square-foot store in The Gulch, a trendy part of Nashville, in 2009. It opened a 9,000-square-foot Anthropologie store at The Shops of Saddle Creek in March.

What do you think about having a national chain move into the neighborhood?

  1. You know, I am usually against big chains in a neighborhood, but if done correctly and sensitively, this could be really cool. My biggest concern would be the traffic, because it is on a busy corner.

  2. great idea! I love Urban Outfitters and if there was one in Cooper-Young I would go to it all the time; it would really become popular for teens and even adults. I think you should go for it I was talking to my friends about it today and it was all 100% yes!

  3. Thanks, Rach for commenting! ;-) We need to hear from you guys and your friends. I like the idea too, to be honest. .. scary to bring in a national chain, but Urban Outfitters fits the vibe in CY, they are very pro-Bike, which is a big deal right now for us in CY as we try to sort out how to do our bike lanes. I think it would be good to see more kids your friends’ ages here, and to have them think of CY as a place they can go to eat and shop instead of just the mall. If we’re careful and don’t go too far.. keep it mostly local biz, that an anchor or two might only help bring more people to explore the local folks (Lux, the restaurants, etc.)

  4. I am also against national chains, however, I feel this would be a good fit. Also it seems that rent in the Cooper-Young area is pretty high so this seems like a good option.

  5. I’d shop there. I already shop their online store. At least this way I can ride my bike there AND get instant gratification at the same time. (I hate waiting for stuff in the mail.) Win. Win.

  6. I too support UO moving into our neighborhood. I don’t know that I’ve ever bought anything from an UO store, but the chain does have a strong reputation among the 18-35 year old demographic, and the more of those dollars we bring to CY, the better.

Like other neighbors, I do prefer local businesses to chain stores, but given how long that location has been empty, I see this as an improvement and a net gain for our neighborhood.

  7. This would be an absolutely incredible deal if worked out! I am an 18-year old that would be ecstatic if this happened. It fits the area and it’s a great store with great morals!
