April Meeting Recap and Elections

Last night we met at the CYCA office for our monthly meeting. We had hoped to be joined by representatives from MLGW to learn about energy efficiency in the summer months but unfortunately those representatives were unable to make it out. We will have new energy efficiency kits available in our office at 2298 Young for anyone who attended last night and had hoped to see the presentation.

While we didn’t get to learn about keeping our energy bills down in the summer heat, we did get a chance to have a little brainstorming for new projects in the community. This summer the CYCA hopes to finish both the mural on Barksdale and converting the Trestle Art to solar power and we’re looking for some great new ideas to tackle next. Increasing community engagement topped the list of things we can work on. Attendees also suggested:

  • Bat boxes or other ways to encourage beneficial wildlife in the neighborhood
  • Cooper Young banners or flags that residents could place on front porches
  • More Little Free Libraries
  • Pet waste disposal stations
  • Self-contained bike repair stations

We loved hearing these great ideas and would like to thank community members for coming up with some great things on the spot!

We also introduced and voted on candidates for our Vice President and Secretary. Liz Royer is running for Vice President. Liz has been a member of the Cooper Young community for many years and has served with us on the Safety Awareness Committee, and as the chair person for both the Block Club and Code Awareness committees. Sal Miller is one of our newest board members and is running for Secretary. Sal has jumped right into the community as our new chairperson for the Membership Committee and is also helping out with the Safety, Health, and Fitness Shindig and the Communications Committee. The election will be open until next Tuesday and any members who wish to vote Yay or Nay on these candidates can email us at info@cooperyoung.com or call into the office at (901)272-2922.

Even though the meeting wasn’t exactly what we planned, we had a great time seeing our neighbors. We hope to see you all again next month!
