Sir or Madam:
In the recent “History of Heart Pine”, the author mentioned that USS Constitution’s keel (backbone) is made from one piece of Heart Pine. While Heart (Pitch Pine) was used in Constitution’s construction (for deck beams and deck planking), her 150-foot keel, which was laid by the autumn of 1794, is made of 3 very large pieces of white oak. This original keel still provides essential structural support to USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world.
Thank you for including USS Constitution in your story of Heart Pine.
Sincerely,
Margherita M. Desy, Historian
Naval History & Heritage Command Detachment Boston
