Proposed McLean Mural
The painting of the western side of the McLean Mural is about to kick off this weekend and we have two great opportunities for you to pitch in!
Saturday from 9 – 11 am
This Saturday we will be cleaning up decomposed leaves and trash from underneath the McLean underpass so that we can begin painting without the worry of tripping or slipping in old leaves.
To Bring: Gloves, shovels, rakes, push brooms
Sunday from 8 am – Noon
On Sunday, artist Carl E. Moore will begin painting the base coats for the mural and he could use a hand. Painting will begin at 8 am and we expect to be done by noon.
To Bring: old painting clothes
RSVP is not required. Just show up to the McLean Underpass (located on McLean between York and Evelyn), sign a volunteer waiver and help out. If you can’t stay the whole time, that is completely fine. We look forward to starting this mural!

The Featured Poster Artist for the 2013 Art for Art’s Sake Auction is the amazing Karen “Bottle” Capps. Karen’s works are always very unique and distinct due to her use of old metal beer and beverage tops, along with other objects others would readily describe as “trash”. Karen’s artwork is a perfect fit with this year’s overall theme of Cooper-Young becoming more environmentally-friendly and sustainable.
In addition to Karen’s amazing skills as an artist, she is also a proud Cooper-Young volunteer. Each year, she dedicates her time to helping organize donations from fellow local artists, setting up and moving the Live Auction display at Otherlands and creates the stage set-up for Auction night. She is a past Alexia Hampton Memorial Award winner and a great asset to our neighborhood.
To learn more about Karen “Bottle” Capps, visit our Art for Art’s Sake Auction website and check out this 2011 article about Karen!

Recycling Bins at Cooper and Walker
Deadline: Tuesday, April 30, 2013
Who Is Eligible: Local Memphis artists 18 years or older.
Design Award: $1,000
Project Green Fork and the UrbanArt Commission invite local artists to create designs for two recycling containers in the Cooper-Young District of Memphis, at the intersection of 1000 South Cooper Street and Walker Avenue. Project Green Fork has adopted the existing recycling center in this location, which is intended to be both functional and visually attractive. Working collaboratively to enhance the cultural and environmental vitality of the neighborhood, the project partners invite stimulating designs. Goal of the project is to create artistic markers that identify the Community Recycling Center as a distinctive Cooper-Young asset that is positive, culturally rich, diverse, lively, and welcoming to both residents and visitors. Previous mural experience is not required.
