Coordinator of Communications & Community Engagement

The Cooper-Young Community Association (CYCA) is seeking a part-time coordinator of communications and community engagement to grow the association’s engaged membership base and event attendance. This position will wear many hats, from communications manager to event planner to community engager. This person must be comfortable working in an unstructured environment, must be a motivated self starter and must be passionate about the Cooper-Young neighborhood.

This position will generally consist of 25-30 hours per week but with the probability of more hours in September and October, around the CYCA’s main fundraising events, the Friday Festival 4 Miler and the Cooper-Young Beerfest.

Responsibilities

Manage all external communications of the CYCA, growing email and social media audiences. This includes but is not limited to managing, responding to and maintaining the CYCA email account; producing and sending a weekly email newsletter with an eye for growing the subscribers of the email list; maintaining Instagram, Facebook and Twitter social media accounts, including posting, responding and managing paid ads; producing monthly content for the LampLighter newspaper; maintaining and updating cooperyoung.org; posting news and announcements and responding to comments on Nextdoor when needed; managing direct mail when needed; maintaining and updating the external public calendar.

Manage all internal communications of the CYCA. This includes but is not limited to posting regular updates, news and background information on Slack and via email to the CYCA board and committees; maintaining and updating the internal/private CYCA calendar; and responding in a timely manner to emails, texts and phone calls as needed from board members.

Manage and grow CYCA membership. This includes but is not limited to finding and implementing creative new ways to grow members, managing the membership business sponsor program, processing memberships, managing the annual membership mailer drive, and constantly keeping membership top of thought while performing other duties, like communication, for example.

Support and help grow CYCA committees and events. This includes but is not limited to attending committee meetings when needed, checking in regularly with committee chairs to offer assistance, staying in the loop on committee happenings; recruiting and training volunteers for committees and events; leading the charge on organizing, promoting and staffing all small events and helping with the two big events per year. Most meetings and events occur outside of normal business hours.

Help the board set CYCA strategy. Facilitate the board retreat and monthly board meetings, provide continuing-education resources to help board members think strategically, take part in strategic discussions, encourage respectful questioning of ideas among board members, provide board members with necessary community feedback around wants and needs for Cooper-Young.

Host monthly and ad hoc community meetings; work with the board to set monthly meeting topics then execute on monthly meetings, including hosting, ensuring attendee sign up and following through after the meeting.

Represent the CYCA to neighbors, the City and community groups and partnerships. Attend external meetings when necessary, work with other groups to further CY’s interests, represent the CY board and community position over your own. Serve as the “front line” of the CYCA to field neighbor questions and complaints and welcome new neighbors.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, community development or similar
  • Minimum of four years working in a professional environment
  • Proven ability to work independently while staying organized, reporting regular updates and maintaining a positive, professional attitude
  • Ability to work regular nights and weekends
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with a volunteer board
  • Experience managing social media and email marketing
  • Familiarity of the Cooper-Young neighborhood
  • Experience in event planning
  • Experience in project management
  • Proficiency in data processing applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, & Powerpoint). Able to learn various database programs used for membership & events.

Physical Considerations

  • Light work requiring the exertion of up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking and manual dexterity.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
