Thanks to the initiative and hard work of Cheryl Bledsoe and other volunteers, the inaugural “Your Place at the Table” on June 21 was a great success. Organized as a way to foster better connections with the communities to the west and south of Cooper-Young, the Cooper-Young Community Association hosted a picnic for our communities, had face painting for the kids (and some adults), and had some terrific door prizes thanks to generous local businesses that donated great items. Around 100 people enjoyed good food and fellowship with their neighbors.

Less than two weeks later, Suzanne Abedi and other volunteers organized and produced our annual 4th of July parade. Over 200 people came out to celebrate Independence Day with their neighbors, enjoy Mempops, and participate in a colorful parade around the block. In addition, the kids enjoyed face painting, a fire truck, and balloon animals.

Fortunately, there are numerous opportunities to get more involved coming up. The National Neighborhood Night Out will be held on August 7. If you would like to host a party or find out if there is already one planned for your block, please contact the CYCA office. We will even reimburse you for food and drink expense up to $50 per party, excluding alcohol.

Finally, we will need many volunteers for the Festival Friday 4 Miler on September 14 and the Cooper-Young Festival on September 15.

Come out and join your neighbors at one of these great events organized by your community! — Mark Morrison
