The world of science is a fascinating exploration. Just ask any of Peabody’s fourth grade students.

They recently had the opportunity to extend their learning of science beyond the classroom. LeMoyne-Owen College’s “Science on Wheels Bus” recently pulled onto our campus and provided students with an engaging experience with electricity that will last a lifetime.

Started in 2016, the “Science on Wheels Bus” was developed by LeMoyne-Owen as a roving laboratory on a converted MATA transit bus. The program aims to bring hand-on science to elementary students throughout the community and inspire more students to pursue STEM degrees.

On the bus’ Peabody stop, a group of students were given an electricity kit. Their goal was to use the materials inside of the kit to create a functional light bulb using open and closed circuits. Once they constructed their light bulb, they met with Lemoyne-Owen instructor, Dr. Robinson, who tested their lights to see if it functioned properly.

Asher Kovarik waited patiently with great anticipation as Dr. Robinson tested his lightbulb. To his amazement, he was successful on your first attempt.

According to Asher, “It was a lot of fun, and it helped me learn a lot.” — Deirdre Jones
