• The Memphis Acoustic Music Association presents a concert by Plainsong on October 1st.
Plainsong features Andy Roberts and Iain Matthews. Matthews was an original member of the seminal English folk-rock band Fairport Convention founded in 1967. Matthews left the band in 1969 and went on form the bands Matthews’ Southern Comfort and Plainsong as well as recording several solo albums. Plainsong;s new release is Reinventing Richard: The Songs of Richard Fariña, a tribute to the Cuban-Irish songwriter, dulcimer player, poet, and novelist who died in a motorcycle accident 50 years ago.
Tickets to Plainsong are $15 and are available at Otherlands and online at Eventbrite.com. Plainsong will also be deejay Ed Dirmeyer’s guests on WEVL FM 89.9 radio show ”Through the Cracks” on October 1st between 2 and 3 p.m.
• Cooper-Young bookstore Burke’s Books is accepting pre-orders for signed copies of John Grisham’s new legal thriller The Whistler. Due October 25th, The Whistler is Grisham’s 29th novel. Set in Florida, it follows Lacy Stoltz, an investigator for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct, as she tackles a corrupt judge.
Born in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and raised in Southaven, Mississippi, Grisham has a long history with Burke’s. The store at 936 S. Cooper has supported the former lawyer-turned-bestselling author since his first novel, A Time To Kill.

• “Idle Speed Only,” a new exhibition of paintings by Marc Rouillard, opens at Jay Etkin Gallery Friday, October 7th.
An instructor at his almer mater, the Memphis College of Art, where he received his MFA, Rouillard has more than 25 years of experience in the graphic design and illustration fields. As an artist Rouillard says “my paintings are based on a personal sense of place that has origins in a youthful passion for collecting butterflies, moths and other insects.”
“Idle Speed Only” runs through November 1st and is open during regular gallery hours and by appointment. There will be a reception with refreshments on opening night from 6-9 p.m.
