On Wednesday, March 28, Corey and Cheryl Mesler, owners of Cooper-Young’s Burke’s Book Store, where they sell new and used books and rare special editions, will be among the recipients of the fourth annual Mojo of Midtown awards.

The Midtown Memphis Development Corporation (MMDC) will present six Mojo of Midtown awards to organizations or individuals who have, through their talent, motivation, innovation, and “mojo,” made a significant difference in the promotion, preservation, economic development or beautification of Midtown.

Other honorees include: Todd Richardson and McLean Wilson with Crosstown Concourse; Gordon Alexander with the Midtown Action Coalition; Margot McNeeley and Janet Boscarino of Project Green Fork; Ward Archer with Protect Our Aquifer; and the Weakes family, owners of 1910 Frame Works & Gallery. Recipients receive unique awards created by local artist Karen Bottle Capps.

Keeping a local book store alive and thriving in today’s hi-tech and online world is an amazing accomplishment. Nestled between two restaurants, Burke’s nourishes readers in a neighborhood known for great dining and nightlife.

Burkes opened in 1875 and moved to Cooper-Young in 2007. The store began as a family owned business on Main Street downtown and after several owners and locations it is family-owned once again. Corey and Cheryl bought the business after working in the store for over a decade. Burkes Books is not only a great place where neighbors shop for new, used, and rare books; celebrities are known to drop in as well. For those not lucky enough to live in Memphis, Burkes offers online shopping. But the best way to experience the magic of Burkes Books is to drop by and savor the aroma of fresh ink with a hint of old leather and pick out a book that suits your tastes.

This is the fourth year of the Mojo of Midtown awards. Channel 5’s Joe Birch will emcee the ceremony during the Mojo of Midtown Awards Bash to be held at Midtown’s Circuit Playhouse. The ceremony will be followed by a party with music by the Ernestine and Hazel’s House Band. Heavy hors d’oeuvres, beer from Cooper-Young’s Memphis Made, as well as wine, a Blue Sky signature cocktail, and Benefiz beverages will be served. Visit midtownmemphis.org to purchase advance tickets for $35; they will be $40 at the door.
