Cooper-Young Community Association wouldn’t be what it is without our neighbors. They volunteer. They own businesses. They contribute their ideas and their passion to the Cooper-Young community. Each month, we will highlight a Member of the Month who gives back and embodies the spirit of our hip, historic community. The MOTM for August is Chuck Parr. He has been a part of the Cooper-Young Festival for as both a vendor and organizer for 22 years. This year will mark the end of his time as a festival organizer. He tells us what’s next and where you can find him at the festival in 2020. If you would like to be involved in what makes CYCA great or recommend a Member of the Month, email info@cooperyoung.org.

How long have you lived in CY?

I have lived in Cooper Young for 18 years.

What is your favorite thing about CY?

I really dig the diversity of the CY neighborhood.

Why do you like volunteering in CY?

I want to help with creating a positive impression of our neighborhood.

What is your favorite CY event of the year and why?

The Cooper-Young Festival is my favorite event in our neighborhood.  I sold retro art and accessories at the festival for 20 years before I took over selling the artist vendor booths for the event.  This year’s festival will be my last to help run the event. I will have a “Chuck’s Retro” booth, once again, at next year’s festival.  So get ready for some more kool [sic] stuff on the street.

What do you have coming up with your free time?

Traveling and spending time with my partner.  Shopping trips to look for cool vintage art and accessories.  Writing songs and performing for anyone who will listen.

Where can we find you on a Friday or Saturday night in CY?

Bar DKDC to see local bands, Celtic for desert. Tsunami for great food. In front of the TV for lax time.

Tell us a good CY story.

At the 3rd or 4th Cooper Young Festival my friend Hank had a booth called “Ask Hank a question”.   It cost a quarter to ask Hank anything. He made a lot of money that day and dispersed infinite wisdom to the crowd.  One attendee asked Hank if he would answer any question. Hank replied, “That will be 25 cents please”

What do you want to see happen in CY in the future?

I’d like for the neighborhood to stay as much like it is as possible. Great nightlife, friendly neighbors and a “kool funky feel.”
