November is a time to give thanks.

The Cooper-Young Community Association gives thanks annually by providing for others in our community through the Suzzane Striker Memorial Food Drive. Every year, volunteers donate food to the First Congo Food Ministry. The food ministry serves free lunch 7 days a week and operates a food pantry for those in need.

Dry and canned items are welcome as well as cash donations. Many clients are able to purchase groceries at the Mid-South Food Bank at about 7 cents per pound, so cash can help spread the support even further.

There are three ways to get involved. The first is to help deliver flyers around the neighborhood to let people know about the food drive. To sign up for a route and arrange to pick up flyers, email

The second option is to fill a grocery bag with non-perishable food and place it on your curb by 9 a.m. on Saturday, November 23.

Finally, you can go to and make a cash donation. Be sure to fill out the description of your donation as the Suzanne Striker Food Drive. — S.S.
