As the holidays approach and the sun sets earlier and earlier, safety becomes a top priority for many. There is a spike in crime as shoppers are caught unaware while loading cars with newly-bought gifts. Restaurant goers are more focused on the fun they are having than their surroundings.

With that in mind, the Cooper-Young Community Association is hosting a free safety and self-defense seminar November 12 at 6 p.m. at our offices at 2298 Young Ave. The seminar will be led by Marcus Manuel, a former defense contractor for the Army who has lived all over the world. He will give tips and tactics on safety in residential and commercial areas. Then, he will teach some basic self-defense maneuvers. He will also be available to answer questions on safety and self-defense.

Comfortable, practical clothing is recommended. Light snacks and refreshments will be served. — Sheree Stubblefield
