Project: Motion Modern Dance Collective inaugurates its 2016-2017 season this month at the Jay Etkin Gallery in Cooper-Young.
Tiny Dances/Hidden Spaces will take place at the gallery at 942 South Cooper St. on October 22nd at 7 p.m. and October 23rd at 6 p.m. The show is a collaboration between Memphis’ longest runngn modern dance company and Carla McDonald and Courtney Oliver of FindMemphis.com, a photography-based website celebrating and promoting the goings-on of Memphis. McDonald (formerly of the Bouffants) and Oliver are resident company members with Playhouse on the Square who create and curate FindMemphis together with England-native Rory Dale. McDonald’s photographs “celebrate the unapologetic soul of a river city.”
According to Project: Motion, the collaboration dives “into the process and product of McDonald’s photographs to show how the city informs us as artists of Memphis, how we thrive in reflecting each other, and how we inspire and in turn are inspired.”
Project: Motion dance makers include Ballet Memphis alum Travis Bradley; local artist and writer Sheri Bancroft; New York Universtiy alum and Memphis native Jonathan Matthews; High Point, NC, dance teacher and performer with JOYEMOVEMENT Amelia Renee Byrd; St. Mary’s instructor and Tennessee Ballet Theater Company Director Erin Kenny Walter; Hutchison ballet and movement instructor Louisa Koeppel; and more.
Project: Motion’s first show of the season lays the groundwork for the group’s 30th anniversary celebration, which will take place at Theatreworks June 28th-July 2nd.
