The Cooper Young Business Association was chartered in November of 1988. The mission of the CYBA is to provide a forum for communication; reclaim the buildings, streetscape and businesses of the district to promote a better business climate; to address common problems; and to promote the district as a desirable place to live, work, and patronize by maintaining a living, creative, and safe environment.
To that end, we:
- Host two interactive websites that highlight our business district. They are: cooperyoung.com and cooperyoungfestival.com.
- Publish an annual tourism pamphlet that is placed in area welcome centers and hotels.
- Maintain membership with the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau.
- Keep an updated database of all business parcels with business owners and property owners.
- Host an office in the center of the neighborhood for visitor information and meetings.
- Attend events and volunteer with the Peabody Elementary School.
- Co-host video camera installations in the Gazebo and First Congo parking areas.
- Trim, spray, and feed all Ginkgo trees that line Cooper Street.
- Post on social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin, and Referral Key.
- Maintain neighborhood street banners that reflect our history and district.
- Represent the area at Land Use Control, City Planning & Development, and City Traffic meetings when appropriate.
- Host monthly police meetings with the colonel and lt. colonel of our district.
- Attend meetings and volunteer with Midtown Memphis Development, MATA Midtown Route, Friends of the Fairgrounds, the Cooper-Young Garden Club, and at-large board of Cooper-Young Neighborhood Watch.
- Write monthly articles for the Lamplighter newspaper.
- Host the annual Cooper-Young Festival fundraiser as well as the annual Kickoff Party, Art Invitational, Young Artist Contest and Cooper-Young Unwrapped Contest.
- Write letters to public officials such as the mayor, city council, and code enforcement when appropriate.
- Make donations to area non-profits, churches, and schools.
- Speak at area civic organizations and schools and colleges regarding our historic district.
- Co-host area events such as the Irish Society St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Humane Society Pup Crawl and RiverCity Safe Halloween.
- Maintain the Gazebo area which includes the beds, concrete, brick, cobblestones, trees, bushes, and the gazebo structure.
